What to do in
Helsinki ?
There is one place every visitor to Helsinki must go: the sauna. Don’t skip it! It’s an institution. Most Finnish people even have one at home. Don’t worry, though, there are also public saunas. Relax as you are bathed in steam. It’s a great way to fully enjoy your visit to the Finnish capital! With a population of 600,000, the city is far from being a megalopolis. That means you can easily explore on foot (or by metro and tram if you want to stay out of the cold!), to truly appreciate its charming neighbourhoods, their characterful architecture and their shops. However, there’s one place you won’t be walking: the little surrounding islands are best reached by ferry. Yes! Helsinki is an archipelago! A trip within a trip!

A culture of modernity
See more See lessHelsinki doesn’t have the history of Saint Petersburg, Tallinn or Stockholm. Once a small town with a population of barely 10,000, it only really expanded in the 19th century, to grow into the city it is today. That means it is not as picturesque as its Baltic Sea neighbours. It was born modern, and that is how it has stayed. Nevertheless, for a weekend or longer, it is an exceptionally interesting cultural destination for those who love design and architecture. Its cafés and boutiques exude originality, and its streets offer a variety of styles and pleasures: National Romantic style, Art Nouveau, and even modernism, embodied by the Finlandia Hall (the major work of Alvar Aalto, Finland’s greatest architect).
As trendy as it may be, the Finnish city has a sense of tradition. There are two traditions in particular that make life there so pleasant. The first, of course, is the sauna: a moment of luxury that is unfortunately difficult to share with your sweetheart, as in the best establishments, visitors go nude, but men and women are separated. But don’t worry, there are plenty of things to share as a couple or with friends. One of those things is the other major element of the Finnish way of life: the cuisine. Soup, Kalakukko (Finnish fish pie), stew, cured salmon, rye bread and local pastries: a real gastronomic discovery!
