Formalities for travelling to Boston
See more See less- Entry formalities: we no longer disembark on the other side of the Atlantic as we did in the days of the Mayflower. Nowadays, there are two rules that must be followed. The first is to travel with a valid passport. The second is to obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) from the US authorities. This can be done online, and the precious document will only be issued 72 hours after your application has been approved. And that's just the minimum! So don't wait until the last minute to apply.
- Currency: as everyone knows, the United States is the country of the dollar, the famous greenback, which is currently trading at around 85-euro cents. For the record, a famous Bostonian, Benjamin Franklin, features on the legendary hundred-dollar bill. Would you like to see what the famous inventor and founding father looked like? Then change a few notes before you leave at the Global Exchange counter, located in both terminals at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport. This will satisfy your curiosity and, more importantly, cover your initial expenses upon arrival.
Your Nice – Boston trip
The Delta Airlines direct flight from Nice to Boston departs from Terminal 2 at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport.
Don't ruin your trip to the States by being a few minutes late for boarding. Make sure you arrive at the airport two hours before take-off so you can go through the passport and security checks. It would even be wiser to add a good half hour to this time if you need to check in with your airline or check in any luggage. Thirty extra minutes may seem like a lot! But when you consider that a trip lasting several days will leave you with wonderful memories for a lifetime, it is not long at all!
Departure airport Nice Côte d'Azur Airport Departure terminal Terminal 2 Arrival airport Boston Logan International Airport Arrival Terminal Terminal E Your arrival at Boston Logan International Airport
It's an exceptional moment and a magnificent sight: a few minutes before landing in Boston, you will see the Boston skyline from the window. Like Nice Côte d'Azur, Logan International Airport is right on the sea’s edge, at the entrance to the city, barely five kilometres from the centre. This makes it easy to get to the city. Choose from:
- Bus: the Silver Line 1 passes through all the airport terminals before going directly to South Station, in the heart of Boston. This service is completely free! There is also a second service: the Logan Express. This private company operates five different services between Boston and its airport. The cost is between $3 and $9, with free travel for those under 17.
- Metro: the Blue Line connects the airport directly to the city centre and links up with the other lines in the metro network. Shuttle buses run between the airport station and all of its terminals.
- Taxi and private hire vehicle: the journey is quick, taking just 20 to 30 minutes. As a bonus, you will be dropped off at your accommodation. However, this convenience comes at a price: between £20 and £30 depending on the destination and traffic conditions.
- Car hire: the airport has centralised all its car hire companies (eleven in total) at its Car Hire Centre, located on the outskirts of the airport. Numerous airport shuttle buses (services 22, 33 or 55) will take you there quickly. To find them, follow the ‘Shuttle Bus’ signs.
What to do in
Boston ?
The United States is too vast a country for any one city to incapsulate its whole story. However, some cities embody it better than others, and Boston, through its history, architecture, universities and way of life, is one of them. It is one of the main cities that shaped America’s identity. Independence, abolitionism, the fight for civil rights and gender equality all took root here. The country's oldest restaurant and merry-go-round are in Boston. So is the oldest park. It is also home to the first public library, the first underground railway network and, of course, the first university.
This glorious past is balanced by a dynamic present, with academics, students and businesspeople working together to invent tomorrow’s world. And yet, the capital of Massachusetts is not one of America’s megacities. With a population of just 650,000, it feels smaller and more human by North American standards. This makes it all the more enjoyable to visit, especially if you follow the Freedom Trail, a walking route that takes you to 16 of the city's unmissable sites in just a few hours.

Bathed by the Atlantic, Boston and its neighbours have no shortage of beaches where you can spread out your towel. Are you travelling as a couple and looking for romance? Stroll hand in hand through the cobbled streets of Beacon Hill. After feasting your eyes on skyscrapers, are you longing for a breath of fresh air? Head to the Emerald Necklace, an 11-kilometre-long walking trail that connects the city's most beautiful parks.

Top 10 things to do in Boston
See more See less- Follow the Freedom Trail, Boston's famous red line made of red bricks sealed into the roads and pavements. Stretching over four kilometres, it takes you on a journey of discovery through the city's most remarkable historical sites and buildings. But you don't have to follow it; you can just as easily set your own itinerary.
- Stroll along the paths of Boston Common, America's oldest public park, created nearly 400 years ago. Picnic in the shade of century-old trees, relax by Frog Pond, and admire the monuments and sculptures that line your walk: Brewer Fountain (six tonnes of cast iron, made in France), the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Boston Massacre Memorial...
- Tick off the city's historic buildings. Feed your body and soul at Faneuil Hall. This houses a covered market, restaurants and exhibitions on the history of Boston and America’s independence. Don't miss the Old State House, the city's oldest building, and its American Revolution Museum. Climb to the top of Bunker Hill Monument, a 67-metre-high obelisk. Visit the Massachusetts State House, where the Massachusetts State Government still sits under its golden dome...
- Travel back in time at the Boston Tea Party Museum. Climb aboard the Beaver and the Eleanor (replicas of the ships of the time!) and relive 16 December 1773, that day of anger against the British Crown, a prelude to the American Revolution, during which the colonists dumped more than 300 crates of English tea into the waters of the harbour.
- Embark on the oldest warship still afloat in the world: the USS Constitution. This wooden three-masted ship was built in 1797! Discovering its cannons, deck and cabins, preserved in their original condition, is a unique experience.
- Stroll through Beacon Hill, Boston's oldest district. It promises an incredibly picturesque atmosphere with its steep, cobbled streets (the most famous of which is Acorn Street), scarlet brick houses and antique gas lamps.

In over 150 years of existence, this museum has amassed a formidable collection of 450,000 artefacts and works of art: Egyptian mummies, Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman antiquities, paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas and others, Japanese prints, classical and modern sculptures, to name but a few.
- On a bike, scooter or in your trainers, stretch your legs on the Harborwalk, a coastal footpath that runs along Boston Harbour for several dozen kilometres. - Set sail from Boston (from Long Wharf, near the Boston Aquarium), Cape Ann (in Gloucester) or Cape Cod, and go whale watching for humpback whales, minke whales, fin whales, dolphins and seals, which can be found in large numbers off the coast of Boston in fine weather.

When is the best time to visit Boston?
Boston is at its most beautiful when the sun is shining. Luckily, there is plenty of sunshine from April to October. Which month is best for making the most of the city? It all depends on your priorities. Spring is ideal for lovely walks, when the city's parks are bursting with colour and fragrance. Be aware that it often rains during this season. However, showers are short and light, and the sun quickly returns.
Early autumn also has its charm, with the red and gold leaves on the trees putting on a magnificent display along the Emerald Necklace. On the other hand, if your idea of being outdoors means necessarily involves the sea, wait until the height of summer! We can't promise you 28°C sea temperatures, as the Atlantic is much cooler than the Mediterranean, but Carson Beach, Revere Beach (the oldest public beach in the United States) and the beaches on Cape Cod are no less enjoyable. What's more, the city is particularly lively at this time of year. The terraces of its restaurants fill up in the evening, there are plenty of festivals throughout the region, and on certain Sundays, Newbury Street, one of the city's most pleasant thoroughfares, is pedestrianised. Ideal for alternating between relaxing and window shopping!
