Nice Côte d’Azur Airport begins plans to expand Terminal 2

Meeting the expectations of airlines and passengers

In preparation for the forecast increase in traffic and to continue to offer the quality of service appreciated by passengers, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur has launched two new projects:

• The construction of a new pier, due to be completed mid-2021. This will make it possible to increase the number of boarding gates and to handle Schengen and non-Schengen passengers in a completely mixed and modular way. The pier will be located in front of six aircraft stands (A320 size), which will be created this winter 2018/2019 and will be big enough to host two large aircraft (Airbus A380 size). The design of the pier will make boarding and disembarking possible directly on foot from the pier.
  The aircraft stands will of course be equipped with a 400 Hz power supply to limit the use of auxiliary power units, resulting in less noise and air pollution.
• A second phase (2022/2023), a new Terminal building, which will not be a “low-cost” extension, to handle all Arrivals / Departures activities – check-in counters, baggage sorting, baggage carousel – incorporating the latest safety and security standards. This extension will not include a new commercial area, but will instead enable the development of short- and long-haul traffic.

They meet not only the expectations of our airlines, who are wholeheartedly in favour of facilities to ease and speed up the processing of their operations, especially for short-haul; but also our passengers, who will benefit from larger and more comfortable waiting areas.”

Developing our region

The selected projects are of a sustainable design and will have to comply with the requirements of strict environmental standards, including the use of:

• renewable energy to cool public spaces by using natural ventilation and free cooling at night, combined with the inertia of the building,
• bio-based materials, such as wood floors from sustainably managed forests and materials with low environmental impact – low emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs),
• passive protection of the skin of the building to prevent solar heating, which would in turn lead to excessive consumption of cooling energy,
• natural daylight and reduced lighting consumption through occupancy detection, etc.

These buildings will not only meet the requirements of current French thermal regulations (RT2012), but they must also meet our carbon neutrality commitments and those recommended by Eco-Vallée.

For our region, these major investments will have a direct economic impact of 80% for the Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco, involving around 20 different building trades from the local area’s construction companies.
This will generate a significant number of new jobs: some 100 people will be working on the site, increasing to more than 200 at the peak of the work. The Airport has also made a commitment to Nice Côte d’Azur City to provide 30 people with an integration contract under the Local Plan for Integration and Employment.
