What to do in Wrocław?
The first thing you need to know about Wrocław is how to pronounce it! You should say ‘Vrot-swaaf’, making sure to roll the ‘r’ sound. And apart from that? It is the third largest city in the country in terms of population and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful destinations in Poland, even though few tourists have heard of it. The medieval architecture — Gothic, to be precise! —in the wonderfully preserved and lively historic centre is a delight to visitors for it is as monumental as it is picturesque. Its canals, rivers and the Oder, the great river that runs through it, divide the city into a dozen different islands, giving it a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. Its culinary traditions, vibrant cultural life and strong student community make this a lively city with a joyful everyday atmosphere.
Live on love and... culture
Wrocław, or Vratislavie as it is sometimes referred to in French, is the ideal setting for a city break for three: you, me and... Cupid. It's impossible not to fall — truly, madly, deeply — in love in this thousand-year-old city where the illuminated, vertiginous spires of its cathedral are reflected as evening falls in the crystal clear waters of its river, where parks are home to secret and exotic gardens, where cobbled streets wind between colourful painted façades, and where countless bridges bear the memory of happy couples who have crossed them, leaving behind, as is now a well-established tradition, a padlock symbolising their attachment.
But while Wrocław makes our hearts beat faster, it also speaks to our souls. The city, which was the European Capital of Culture in 2016, is home to a wealth of museums, exhibitions, art galleries and concerts. Its architectural heritage, shaped over the centuries by the city's various masters, from the Prussians to the Poles and the Czechs, is equally remarkable. But culture is also nourished by the ‘local’ and the ‘everyday’, by simple pleasures with a popular flavour, by the smells and colours of the stalls at Hala Targowa, the city's covered market, by a glass of beer on a sunny terrace or a bowl of borscht in a friendly eatery.

Top 10 things to do in Wrocław
See more See less- Stroll through Ostrów Tumski, the cradle of Wrocław. Once an island, it is now an open-air museum with cobbled streets, statues and centuries-old monuments, including St. John the Baptist Cathedral, guarded by its twin bell towers nearly 100 metres high.
- Leave Ostrów Tumski by crossing the most romantic of Wrocław's 112 bridges: the Tumski Bridge. This small metal bridge spanning one of the branches of the Oder is lined with street lamps that are lit by hand! Just like in the good old days! But it is best known as the ‘lovers' bridge’, where couples attach padlocks to the railings as a token of their love.
- Stop at the Market Square, known locally as Rynek. Every Polish city has one, but Wrocław's is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. This huge square is lined with old façades, starting with the Town Hall, a true Gothic splendour.
- Walk around in circles so you don't miss any of the thousand details of the Racławice Panorama. This circular fresco is one of the most spectacular paintings in Europe, measuring 114 metres in circumference and 15 metres high. It depicts the Battle of Racławice, in 1794, when the Poles triumphed over the Russians.
- Leave the historic centre to discover one of Wrocław's most charming districts: Nadodrze, a haven for street art, artists, arty courtyards and bohemian cafés.
- Go hunting for ‘Krasnale’ in the streets of Wrocław. These are small bronze figurines of dwarves, dotted around the city. The first one was created in 2001 to honour Alternative Orange, an anti-communist group whose emblem was a gnome. It spawned many more: there are now more than 350 of them for you to track down!
- Head to the Centennial Hall to see a concert or an exhibition, or simply admire the architecture of this structure which, 110 years after its inauguration, is still one of the largest reinforced concrete buildings in the world. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Awaken your inner child with a visit to Kolejkowo. This museum, housed in a former railway station, specialises in miniature trains. Steam locomotives, trams and freight trains speed through richly detailed scenery.
- Try the local specialities: borscht, the famous beetroot soup, herring with onions, pierogi, the famous Polish ravioli stuffed with potato and cheese — but that's not all! — and pierniki, gingerbread biscuits. All accompanied (in moderation, of course) by a local beer or a honey or cherry liqueur.
- Hit the road and, after an hour and a half's drive through the Silesian countryside, discover Moszna, considered by many to be the most beautiful castle in Poland. With 365 rooms, 99 towers and turrets in a 200-hectare estate, it never fails to amaze its visitors and guests. Part of the building has been turned into a hotel, making it the ideal place to extend your stay in Wrocław with a romantic weekend getaway!
